MH17 was shot down on July 17<sup>th<\/sup> 2014, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board.<\/p>\n<p>Current news that a security researcher named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackhat.com\/us-14\/speakers\/Ruben-Santamarta.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruben Santamarta<\/a> discovered a way to infiltrate the satellite communications on an airplane and interfere with its navigation and safety systems is more than just chilling in the wake of airplane tragedies this year.<\/p>\n<p>Santamarta is a consultant with a cyber-security firm called IOActive. He plans to lay out technical details of how to perform the hack during one of his most highly anticipated talks at this week\u2019s Black Hat conference in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>The exploit involves accessing a passenger jet\u2019s satellite communication equipment through its onboard Wi-Fi or inflight entertainment system. Then, vulnerabilities in the satellite communications systems could potentially allow remote, unauthenticated hackers to disrupt satellite communications, which could then interfere with a plane\u2019s navigation and safety features.<\/p>\n<p>In some situations, no user interaction is necessary in exploiting flaws and hacking the system. IOActive say that a simple text message could do the trick. These vulnerabilities extend beyond planes to other modes of transportation and services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cars<\/li>\n<li>Ships<\/li>\n<li>Aircrafts<\/li>\n<li>Military Personnel<\/li>\n<li>Emergency Services<\/li>\n<li>Media Services<\/li>\n<li>Industrial Facilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, Santamarta said he has only tested the hacks in a laboratory, and they might be too difficult to perform on actual aircrafts in the real world. He hopes that whatever happens, his information will encourage satellite communications vendors to fix their flaws as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Whether this hack can be performed or not, it definitely needs to be addressed and solved, as this is not the first time security researchers have shown planes to be vulnerable.
